ZBrush: The CAD Software for Creating 3D-Printed Sculptures
As you may know, before starting a printing process, it is first necessary to obtain a 3D digital model of a part. Perhaps the best-known modeling method is computer-aided design (CAD). It can be used to create individual models with a high level of detail. A number of software programs, some free, some not, offer the option of designing your own 3D models. Among these is ZBrush, developed by Pixologic and first launched in 1999. ZBrush, a popular software in the 3D industry, offers a variety of features for creating digital sculptures and paintings
Unlike well-known CAD programs such as Sketchup, FreeCAD or 3D Builder, ZBrush is aimed at professionals and 3D printing enthusiasts wishing to create highly realistic sculptures. According to users of the software, it enables the creation of models with very fine details, which are therefore suitable for additive manufacturing. In fact, some artists don’t hesitate to use ZBrush and 3D printing to create all kinds of works. For example, Californian design studio Aaron Sims Creative used these processes to bring the Demogorgon, the famous creature from Stranger Things, to life. And they’re not the only ones. Designer Eddie Christian used ZBrush to reproduce a mask with the Joker’s smile.
ZBrush Features
The platform features a number of tools to enable users to create models with more than realistic detail. With ZBrush, you work in the same way as analog artists, using brushes to model and create sculptures. When you use the software, you can choose from the same features available to film studios, jewelry designers and other artists worldwide. The latest version of ZBrush 2023 includes new features that give artists even greater freedom and faster editing.
For example, the new Mask Region function automatically fills the contours of complex masks. Slime Bridge also lets you create slime structures at the touch of a button by marking different components of a network. And the Dynamic Symmetry function is an extension of local symmetry, allowing the model to move, scale and rotate while maintaining symmetry.
The release of the next version of the software next year is also scheduled for November 2024. Changes include an update to the Anchor brush and expanded possibilities for the Knife Brush function. The current ZBrush software is available in its full version starting from $29.91 per month or $359.00 per year. Find out more HERE.
