The Carbon M2 is a production 3D printer from the manufacturer Carbon, based in the USA. It offers a larger build volume compared to its older version, the Carbon M1. The M2 is ideal for smaller parts with more intricate features, such as ‘threading or internal channels’.
Carbon M2, doubling the build volume of the M1
Compared to the Carbon M1, the build volume of the M2 from Carbon is twice as large, while keeping the high resolution and accuracy. The system still uses Carbon’s proprietary 3D printing technology: Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP). CLIP works by projecting light through an oxygen-permeable window into a reservoir of UV curable resin. The build platform lifts continuously as the object is grown without requiring more time-consuming steps. To make this simple process even easier for the user, the M2 comes with a built-in print planner which automatically defines the print speed according to the part requirements.
CLIP 3D printing process is 25 to 100 times faster than usual 3D printing techniques. An additional advantage of the CLIP technology is the resistance of the 3D printed objects, with no weaknesses between layers.
Also, in terms of materials, CLIP technology is compatible with Carbon proprietary materials; including Rigid Polyurethane (RPU), Flexible Polyurethane (FPU), Elastomeric Polyurethane (EPU), Cyanate Ester, Epoxy and Urethane Methacrylate.
As with the M1, the Carbon M2 comes with the Carbon Design Engine software, which allows the user to generate a perfect lattice shape according to desired structural and mechanical properties. The printer can be used for a range of applications, from the dental sector with dentures and bonding trays, to personalized glasses and earbud tips. It can also be used for electronic products such as heat exchangers.
The Carbon M2 can be acquired on a subscription based model at $25,000/yr, with a range of different packages available for the consumer to choose from.
